Pekin Bantam

Round, footed true bantam — a globe of feathers.

Overview

Originating in China, the Pekin Bantam was known there as the 'Coaching chicken' or 'Peking Bantam'. They were introduced to Europe in the mid-19th century, with some accounts suggesting they were taken from the Emperor's summer palace. These initial imports were then bred and refined, primarily in England, to establish the distinct type recognized today. The breed became popular for its ornamental qualities and docile nature.

Over time, Pekin Bantams have been developed into numerous color varieties, solidifying their status as a popular show bird. Their unique, heavily feathered appearance, including feathered legs and feet, sets them apart from many other bantam breeds. The breed continues to be widely kept by poultry fanciers globally, valued for exhibitions, as pets, and for backyard flocks.

Origins

Tracing back to China / England, the Pekin Bantam earned its place in the lineage of bantams through generations of selection — a slow conversation between climate, husbandry, and human eye. Round, footed true bantam — a globe of feathers.
