German Langshan

Tall, upright variant of the Chinese Langshan.

Overview

The German Langshan emerged from the Chinese Langshan, first imported into Germany in the late 19th century. Breeders sought to develop a distinct type, emphasizing a taller, more upright stature and a more refined appearance. This selective breeding process, focusing on conformational traits, led to the establishment of the German Langshan as a separate and recognized breed, rather than simply a regional variation of the original Langshan.

Over the subsequent decades, the German Langshan solidified its unique characteristics through persistent breeding efforts. It gained recognition as a dual-purpose fowl, appreciated for both its meat qualities and egg-laying capabilities, while also being valued for its distinctive aesthetic. Though perhaps not as widely distributed as some other breeds, it maintains a dedicated following among enthusiasts who appreciate its elegance and utility.

Origins

Tracing back to Germany, the German Langshan earned its place in the lineage of chickens through generations of selection — a slow conversation between climate, husbandry, and human eye. Tall, upright variant of the Chinese Langshan.

Temperament

Custodians describe the German Langshan as known for a calm and docile nature, making them manageable birds..
