Erckel's Francolin
Highland francolin of Ethiopia, introduced to Hawaii.
Overview
The Erckel's Francolin is native to the highlands of Ethiopia and into parts of Eritrea. It is one of the larger francolin species found in its natural range, inhabiting montane forests and areas with dense undergrowth. Its foraging habits and diet are typical of ground-dwelling gamebirds, consisting of seeds, shoots, and insects.
This species has been introduced outside its native range, notably to the Hawaiian Islands. These introductions were intended to establish game bird populations in new environments. The adaptability of the Erckel's Francolin has allowed it to establish stable populations in these new habitats, demonstrating its resilience to a variety of conditions.
