Baikal Teal

Spectacular harlequin-faced Asian dabbling duck.

Overview

Found across eastern Asia, the Baikal Teal is one of the continent's distinctive migratory ducks. Its striking plumage has long been admired, and specimens were brought to Europe at least as early as the nineteenth century, where they were depicted and studied. While never a domesticated species, these birds have been kept in collections globally due to their beauty and appeal, contributing to general knowledge of their biology and behavior.

Throughout its range, the species faces pressures common to migratory waterfowl, such as habitat alteration, hunting, and environmental factors. Despite these challenges, the Baikal Teal continues its seasonal movements, attracting significant interest from birdwatchers and conservationists alike. Efforts to monitor populations and protect key stopover and breeding sites are ongoing, reflecting the commitment to securing its future.

Origins

Tracing back to East Asia, the Baikal Teal earned its place in the lineage of ornamental waterfowl through generations of selection — a slow conversation between climate, husbandry, and human eye. Spectacular harlequin-faced Asian dabbling duck.
